Orlando, Fl. Teen Murdered

Rest In Peace, Trayvon

This story was created in an attempt to educate about the completely unnecessary murder of Trayvon Martin. In case you haven’t seen the videos, this 17-year-old Florida boy was walking home to his father’s house from the convenience store, with nothing in his possession except for a pack of Skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea. George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old self-appointed “Neighborhood Watch” member, started following Martin, shortly before placing a 911 call about a “suspicious person” in the gated neighborhood. Martin, who was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time, told her that he was being followed. The last thing she heard Martin say was him asking Zimmerman, “Why are you following me?”, and Zimmerman’s reply, “What are you doing here?” Afterward, Martin dropped the phone, and the line went dead. Police reported to the scene 5 minutes after the phone call ended, according to the phone records. Zimmerman claims the shooting was in self-defense. Oh, and in case I forgot to mention it…Zimmerman is not African-American. Martin, however, is.

More than 500,000 signatures have been collected on petitions urging the conviction and imprisonment of Zimmerman. However, he’s still walking around free, hiding behind his cowardly defense.

The following link is an entry which was created using Storify, a website that allows for the compilation of various sources in order to form a “collage” news story. It was my intention to use my sources in as much of an organized way as I saw fit, while trying to use varied enough sources to capture multiple thoughts and ideas on many platforms. Storify is definitely a useful tool for anyone who has journalistic desires, but isn’t quite sure of where to start.
